Diamond (Boston, 1937) es geógrafo, fisiólogo, biólogo evolutivo y divulgador científico estadounidense, conocido por estudiar cómo el ambiente, la geografía y las decisiones humanas han condicionado el destino de las sociedades. En Colapso. Por qué unas sociedades perduran y otras desaparecen (2005), examina casos tan diversos como la Isla de Pascua, los mayas, los anasazi y los asentamientos vikingos de Groenlandia para identificar factores que pueden conducir al declive de una civilización: deterioro ambiental, cambios climáticos, conflictos, pérdida de socios comerciales y respuestas políticas inadecuadas.
