What if we have misunderstood one of the most important moments in the history of the early church? Acts tells us that the church in Jerusalem grew with extraordinary speed. Thousands believed at Pentecost. Thousands more followed. Believers gathered publicly and from house to house until persecution suddenly erupted after the martyrdom of Stephen. Then something remarkable happened. The believers scattered. The apostles stayed. And the people who scattered “went around preaching the word”. In The Scattering: A Case Study, Matt Jones reconstructs the first years of the Jerusalem church within their actual first-century world—its enormous festival crowds, Jewish families and communities, house churches, synagogues, geography, and rapid growth. The resulting picture challenges the familiar idea that the expansion of Christianity was driven primarily by a small group of apostles and missionaries. Instead, Jerusalem appears to have produced something much larger: a ministry force. Ordinary believers had learned to pray together, care for one another, proclaim the gospel, make disciples, and function as communities. When persecution scattered them, the ministry scattered with them. But this is more than an investigation of the early church. It raises an uncomfortable modern question. What if the purpose of gathering believers is not simply to build larger churches—but to develop disciples who are capable of being scattered? The Scattering follows the evidence from Jerusalem into the surrounding Jewish world, examines the roles of leaders and ordinary believers, and finally asks whether the same principle could change the way we think about healthy churches today. Perhaps gathering believers was never the problem. Perhaps we simply forgot to scatter them.
