Synopsis "the willowdale handcar,or the return of the black doll"

In this enigmatic, surreal, wonderfully entertaining tale, three mysterious figures set out from Willowdale, traveling by handcar. On the way to nowhere in particular they pass a number of odd characters and observe a series of baffling phenomena, from a house burning down in a field to a palatial mansion perched precariously on a bluff. At once deeply vexing and utterly hilarious, darkly mysterious and amusingly absurd, The Willowdale Handcar is vintage Edward Gorey.

Edward Gorey (1925-2000) was an American author, illustrator, and artist known for his distinctive, dark, and macabre humor style. Throughout his career, Gorey wrote and illustrated over 100 books, many of which have left an indelible mark on literature and visual arts. His work spans a wide range of genres, from children's literature to horror and mystery, always with a unique approach that mixed the gothic and the absurd.

Among his most famous works are The Gashlycrumb Tinies (1963), The Doubtful Guest (1957), and The Unstrung Harp (1953). His illustration style is instantly recognizable by its fine and detailed lines, often in shades of white, black, and gray. Although he did not receive major awards, his influence on art and literature is widely recognized.
