Ucanal is located on the Mopn River and can be reached from the Road that goes to Melchor de Mencos, from Flores, Guatemala and then, looking for Tikalito village. It is 51 miles (82 km) to the south of Tikal. At the headwaters of the Belize River, Ucanal was a strategic location, envied by all the powers of the Classic Maya. K'anwitznal was the ancient name of the Ucanal polity, and one of its first rulers was AJAW K'UK' or Lord Quetzal. It had strong ties with Tikal and, in the seventh century, Caracol. K'anwitznal was attacked by the Kalomt queen-regent, Wac' Chanil Ahau or Lady Six Sky of Naranjo (Saal) in September and December, 693; and in 1 February 695 Ucanal's lord Kinich Cab ("Shield-Jaguar") was hauled to Naranjo in chains. Kinich Cab remained in Naranjo as of 22 June 712; Ucanal became a satellite.
