Synopsis "Variations on Blue"

What color is love when it has been lost? What is the color of faith when it is questioned? What is the color of memories, wounds, hopes, fears, and histories that shape the person we become? Variations on Blue explores the many shades of the colors of life--love and loss, race and identity, faith and doubt, youth and age, isolation and belonging. Moving between deeply personal and shared experiences that bind us, the poems in Variations on Blue confront the forces that define us, the people who change us, and the questions that remain long after the answers have been given and disappeared. At times tender, angry, mournful, defiant, and hopeful, Variations on Blue does not offer a single meaning for the color blue. Instead, blue becomes memory, sorrow, reflection, struggle, love, and transformation--a color continually altered by experience. These are poems about what we inherit, what we endure, what we question, what we gain, what we lose, and what we choose to become. Because life is never simply one color. It is variation.
