Der Autor und Maler Max Dauthendey (1867-1918) zählt zu den bedeutendsten Vertretern des deutschen Impressionismus. Über seine Gedichte sagte einst Stefan George, dass sie das Einzige seien, "was jetzt in der ganzen Literatur als vollständig Neues dastehe...eine eigenartige Kunst, die reicher genie en lasse als Musik und Malerei, da sie beides zusammen sei". Wie kaum ein anderer schaffte Dauthendey es, impressionistische Bilder in Wortkunst zu übersetzen. Der vorliegende Band enthält eine Sammlung von Gedichten, die erstmals 1911 veröffentlicht wurden.
