In this work, first published in 1986, the author shows how the Zionists of the late Thirties related to the Arabs of Palestine and of the neighbouring countries, to what extent they perceived the existence of an 'Arab Question', how they defined it and how they dealt with it. The Arab question is as old as the Zionist movement itself. From the moment that Zionists began to immigrate to Ottoman Palestine in the last decades of the nineteenth century, it became apparent that they were not 'returning' to an empty land and that they could expect opposition to their enterprise from the inhabitants of the country they considered theirs. Comprising diplomatic, political, social, economic and cultural history, this book is a close analysis of the spectrum of views and opinions pertaining to Zionist relations with the Arabs.

Ian Black fue un periodista, escritor y analista británico, reconocido por su amplia cobertura de Oriente Medio y su compromiso con un periodismo riguroso y equilibrado. Nació en 1953 y dedicó gran parte de su carrera a trabajar para el periódico The Guardian, donde ocupó varios cargos importantes, entre ellos corresponsal en Jerusalén, editor diplomático y editor para Oriente Medio. A lo largo de más de tres décadas, cubrió acontecimientos cruciales como las guerras en la región, los procesos de paz entre Israel y Palestina, las revoluciones árabes y otros momentos clave en la historia contemporánea de esa zona.

Además de su trabajo periodístico, fue autor de varios libros que analizan con profundidad la historia y los conflictos del Medio Oriente, destacando su interés por ofrecer una mirada crítica y matizada sobre temas complejos. Tras retirarse del periodismo activo, continuó vinculado al mundo académico como investigador y conferencista.

En los últimos años de su vida, fue diagnosticado con una enfermedad neurodegenerativa, lo que no impidió que compartiera su experiencia con honestidad y sensibilidad.
