Adeline Yen Mah
Adeline Yen Mah, born in Tianjin, China, on November 30, 1937, is a Chinese-American doctor and writer. Two weeks after her birth, her mother died of puerperal fever and Yen Mah was considered a sign of bad luck. Because of this, her family treated her harshly throughout her childhood.

After her mother's death, her father and stepmother moved to Shanghai with her and her siblings. Later, when Yen Mah turned eleven, they moved to Hong Kong. There, she won a playwriting competition, which led her father to allow her to study in England in 1952.

In the United Kingdom, she studied Medicine at the London Hospital Medical School, specializing in anesthesia. Her medical career began in the United States after having worked in Hong Kong.

In literature, she published in 1997 Falling Leaves, an autobiographical novel where Yen Mah starkly recounts her family experiences. The success it garnered prompted her to leave medicine and dedicate herself fully to writing. After her literary debut, the author has published novels and children's books.

To promote communication between East and West, she founded the Falling Leaves Foundation, of which she is president.
