Knollmann earned his medical degree in Germany and completed his training in pharmacology in the United States. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of cardiac arrhythmias, particularly in the function of actin filaments and calcium release channels. His laboratory develops and evaluates new antiarrhythmic therapies in both animal models and humans
He is co-editor of the fourteenth edition of Goodman & Gilman: The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics, a reference work in clinical pharmacology that addresses the action and use of therapeutic agents in relation to physiology and pathophysiology
