James Jamerson
James Jamerson (1936–1983) was an influential American bassist, known for his work with the Motown label during the 1960s and 1970s. As a member of the session musician group known as The Funk Brothers, Jamerson contributed to numerous hits by artists like Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, and Stevie Wonder. His innovative and melodic style transformed the role of the bass in popular music, influencing generations of subsequent bassists.
Although he did not publish his own literary works, his life and legacy were documented in the book Standing in the Shadows of Motown: The Life and Music of Legendary Bassist James Jamerson (1989), written by Allan Slutsky. This book includes transcriptions of his bass lines and interviews with musicians who admired him. In recognition of his musical contribution, Jamerson was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004 as a member of The Funk Brothers.
