Jean Delumeau
Jean Delumeau (Nantes, 1923 – Brest, 2020) was a prominent French historian specialized in the history of religious mentalities in the West, particularly during the Renaissance and the Early Modern Period. He held the chair of History of Religious Mentalities at the Collège de France between 1975 and 1994, and was a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. His innovative approach in historiography earned him accolades such as the Grand Prix Gobert from the Académie française in 1968 for his work The Civilization of the Renaissance.

Among his most influential works are Fear in the West (1978), Sin and Fear (1983), Confession and Forgiveness (1990) and the Paradise History trilogy, consisting of The Garden of Earthly Delights (1992), A Thousand Years of Happiness (1995) and What Remains of Paradise? (2000). These publications fall within the genre of historical essay and have been fundamental in understanding the collective representations of fear, sin, and hope in Western Christian culture.
