His first novel, Matterhorn: A Novel of the Vietnam War (2010), based on his experiences, was critically acclaimed and received awards such as the Colby Award and the W.Y. Boyd Literary Award for Excellence in Military Fiction. He followed with What It Is Like to Go to War (2011), a non-fiction work about the experience of combat and reintegration into civilian life, and Deep River (2019), a family saga about Finnish immigrants in the northwest United States. In 2024 he published Cold Victory, set during the Cold War. His writing is characterized by an intense and reflective narrative on war, identity, and human resilience.
