Konstantín Paustovski
Konstantin Georgievich Paustovsky was born in 1892 in Moscow. His father was a railway statistician and his mother came from a family of Polish intellectuals. Paustovsky grew up between Kiev and the Ukrainian countryside, then part of the Russian Empire. He studied at the first imperial institute in Kiev, where Bulgakov also studied. During those years, he published his first stories. He began studying Natural History at the University of Kiev, but in 1914 he left to study Law at the University of Moscow. However, his studies were interrupted by the outbreak of World War I, in which he served in a medical unit. Two of his brothers died at the front and, upon returning, he settled in Moscow where he took care of his mother. While working in metallurgical factories, he began working on his first novel, Romantiki. During the Russian Civil War, Paustovsky was first drafted by the Ukrainian Army and then by the Red Army. With the publication of Kara-Bugaz (1932) he gained fame as a writer. During World War II, Paustovsky served as a war correspondent on the southern front. The work that consecrated him and is considered his masterpiece is Story of a Life, the great account of his life experience composed of six volumes: Distant Years (1946), A Turbulent Youth (1954), The Dawn of an Uncertain Era (1956), Time of Great Expectations (1958), Journey to the South (1960), and The Book of Wandering (1963). This monumental work led him to be a four-time Nobel Prize in Literature nominee. He died in Moscow in 1968.
