María Moliner
María Juana Moliner Ruiz (1900–1981) was a Spanish philologist, librarian, and lexicographer, renowned for her monumental Dictionary of Spanish Usage (1966), a work that transformed Spanish lexicography and cemented her legacy as one of the most influential figures in the history of the Spanish language
Born in Paniza, Zaragoza, Moliner studied at the Institución Libre de Enseñanza and graduated in Philosophy and Letters from the University of Zaragoza. During the Second Republic, she actively participated in the Pedagogical Missions, promoting literacy and access to culture in rural areas. After the Civil War, she faced repression from the Franco regime, which limited her access to academic and professional positions. Despite this, she continued her work in libraries and archives, and in 1955 began to draft her dictionary alone, using a typewriter and pencil, in her spare time and without institutional support
The Dictionary of Spanish Usage is a semasiological and onomasiological work that not only defines words but also explains their use, provides synonyms and contextual examples, and organizes terms in a way that is accessible to the user.
