Michel de Montaigne
Michel Eyquem de Montaigne (Saint-Michel-de-Montaigne, 1533 – 1592), philosopher, humanist, and moralist, was one of the most important thinkers of the French Renaissance. He studied Law and served as a magistrate in Bordeaux before retiring to his castle to devote himself to reading and contemplation. At the age of thirty-eight, he began writing The Essays, a masterpiece that popularized the essay as a literary form. He has been described as the most classic of the moderns and the most modern of the classics.
