San Isidoro de Sevilla
Saint Isidore of Seville (c. 560–636) was an influential Visigothic bishop and scholar, considered one of the last Fathers of the Western Church. He was born in Cartagena, Spain, into a deeply Christian family; his siblings Leandro, Fulgencio, and Florentina were also canonized. After studying in Seville, he succeeded his brother Leandro as bishop of the city, a position he held for 36 years. His episcopate was noted for its educational and cultural work, being key in the training of clergy and in the preservation of classical knowledge.
His most outstanding work is the Etymologies (around 634), a monumental encyclopedia that covers various fields of knowledge, such as theology, history, art, law, grammar, cosmology, and natural sciences. This work saved much of the ancient knowledge from oblivion and was fundamental for medieval education. Additionally, he completed the Mozarabic missal and breviary, and presided over important councils such as the Second Council of Seville (619) and the Fourth Council of Toledo (633), where he promoted the creation of cathedral schools for the training of clergy.
Saint Isidore was canonized in 1598 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1722. He is venerated as the patron saint of historians, philosophers, philologists, and, curiously, of the Internet, due to his work in compiling and transmitting knowledge.
