Tessa Hulls
Tessa Hulls is an American artist, writer, and illustrator born in 1984, known for her multidisciplinary approach that combines art, history, and graphic narrative. She grew up in Northern California and has lived in various places, including Seattle and Juneau, Alaska, where she currently resides. Her work focuses on exploring family history and generational trauma, especially through the experiences of the women in her maternal lineage

Her most notable work is Feeding Ghosts: A Graphic Memoir (2024). This book has been awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography in 2025, becoming the second graphic novel to receive this recognition after Art Spiegelman's Maus. Additionally, it has won the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award and the John Leonard Prize from the National Book Critics Circle. The graphic novel tells the story of three generations of Chinese women: Hulls' grandmother, Sun Yi; her mother, Rose; and the author herself, addressing themes such as exile, mental illness, and cultural identity. The work has been praised for its emotional depth and innovative use of the graphic medium to tell an intimate and universal story
