لأبي تمّام وأبي الطيّب في تاريخ الشِّعريّة العربيّة مكانةٌ عاليةٌ قلّ أن يجاريَهما فيها شاعرٌ من الشُّعراء العرب قدماءَ ومحدَثين، ولا يكاد يَرِد اسمُ أحدهما أو تعرض سيرتُه إلا خطر اسمُ ثانيهما وحضرت سيرتُه. وهما الشّاعران اللّذان توجد بينهما - ربّما - من الجوامع والمشتركات ما لا توجد عند غيرهما. ولعلّهما، في الوقت ذاته، من الشُّعراء الأكثر إثارة للجدل في تاريخ الشِّعر العربيّ كلِّه، وهو الجدل الذي يبدأ من اختلاف الدّارسين حول نسبهما وحياتهما، ولا ينتهي عند مذهبهما الشِّعريّ بما ينطوي عليه هذا الجانب من تفصيلات وتعارضات نتج عنها مؤلَّفاتٌ واسعةٌ في الاحتجاج لهذا المذهب أو الاحتجاج عليه.
