文革电影是红色文化的代表，是30年代激进思潮的爆发，是17年文艺体制和观念的升级。毛江的合作与距离，将文革电影分成了三个阶段。本书分成纵横两部分。纵的部分讲电影人的境况、电影的大批判、电影的生产与审查、电影的禁映与放映。横的部分讲样板戏电影、故事片和"阴谋电影"。文革中一共生产了76部故事片以及近60部戏曲片，故事片出现了知青、工宣队、赤脚医生、教育革命等新题材。这些影片与样板戏的思想、结构、叙事一脉相承。
