“Tengo curiosidad sobre la curiosidad” es la afirmación que abre este libro. Una de las primeras frases que aprendemos de niños es “¿por qué?”. La decimos una y otra vez, para saber algo del mundo en que vivimos, para entender cómo funcionan las cosas o para compartir con otros nuestra perplejidad. Y aunque muy pronto descubrimos que la curiosidad pocas veces encuentra respuestas reveladoras y definitivas, seguimos preguntando, porque el deseo de saber y de dialogar con otros es más fuerte. Y porque nos damos cuenta de que si las afirmaciones tajantes tienden a aislar, a dejarnos solos con lo que creemos saber, las preguntas unen.

En Una historia natural de la curiosidad, Alberto Manguel plantea interrogantes muy diversos y –apoyándose en su rica experiencia de lecturas y viajes, pero también de afectos y trabajos– despliega respuestas cautivantes. Cada capítulo abre con una pregunta (¿Qué es la curiosidad?, ¿Qué es el lenguaje?, ¿Quién soy?, ¿Dónde está nuestro lugar?, ¿Qué hay después?, ¿Qué podemos poseer?, entre otras) y sigue con una respuesta que, lejos de ser enciclopédica y convencional, narra en estricta clave autobiográfica el vínculo con el tema planteado. Así, para elucidar qué es el impulso de poseer, Manguel empieza contando cuál es su relación con el dinero y los objetos; para responder dónde está nuestro lugar en el mundo, reflexiona sobre su propia vida, hecha de mudanzas constantes, y para explicar qué es el lenguaje relata una situación personal extrema, la imposibilidad desesperante de poner en palabras el pensamiento en medio de un accidente cerebrovascular. Desde luego, este enfoque autobiográfico es el punto de partida, sólido y genuino, de un desarrollo que se nutre de la historia, la literatura, el arte o lo cotidiano.

Esta obra, tal vez la más personal del autor del ya clásico Una historia de la lectura, constituye una guía y un recordatorio de las preguntas fundamentales y del ejercicio de pensar sin moldes a partir de ellas, asumiendo el riesgo y la marca de la propia historia.

Alberto Manguel is a writer, editor, translator, and essayist of Argentine-Canadian descent, born in Buenos Aires on March 13, 1948. Internationally recognized for his profound reflection on reading, books, and libraries, Manguel has dedicated much of his work to exploring the connection between human beings and the written word.

During his youth, he briefly worked as a reader for Jorge Luis Borges, an experience that deeply marked his life and his view of the act of reading. In the 1980s, he moved to Canada, where he became a citizen and developed much of his career as an author. He also lived in other countries, such as France and Germany, and has worked in various roles related to the publishing, academic, and library worlds.

Among his most famous books are A History of Reading (1996), The Library at Night (2006), and The Traveler with the Light Luggage (2011). His work blends personal memory, cultural history, and literary criticism, with a scholarly yet accessible style.

He was the director of the National Library of Argentina from 2016 to 2018. Considered a great contemporary humanist, Manguel continues to be an influential figure in thinking about written culture and reading as a form of knowledge and freedom.
