LOUISE GLÜCK (Nueva York, 1943), Premio Nobel de Literatura 2020, inaugura con Ararat (1990), el quinto libro de su trayectoria, su particular estilo poético que luego mantendrá a lo largo de toda su carrera: ya no se trata de recopilaciones de poemas más o menos cohesionados, sino de libros construidos casi como un único poema en partes, en torno a un solo tema, donde los símbolos funcionan por acumulación y cada texto aporta un contexto a los demás, multiplicando las interpretaciones y los puntos de vista sobre la experiencia del sujeto lírico. Ararat toma su título del cementerio judío homónimo de Nueva York. Los poemas abordan el luto posterior a la muerte de un padre mitificado, enterrado allí, donde además descansa una de sus hermanas, fallecida prematuramente y que será también una presencia constante en el libro. La poeta explora el mundo de las mujeres sobrevivientes de la familia la madre, la hija, la hermana en un tono lacónico y reticente que abandona definitivamente la pirotecnia verbal de sus primeros poemarios y conecta con el silencio y el distanciamiento emocional que ella misma relaciona con su padre fallecido, un tono contenido que un crítico equiparó con «la clase de lenguaje que uno usa antes de ponerse a gritar».

Louise Elisabeth Glück was born on April 22, 1943 in New York, United States, into a family of Hungarian Jewish descent. From an early age, she showed an inclination for literature and poetry, influenced by reading and the intellectual environment of her home. Her youth was marked by the struggle against anorexia, an experience she would later address in her work with honesty and depth.

She studied at Sarah Lawrence College and Columbia University, although she did not complete a formal degree due to her illness. Despite these facts, she began a literary career that would make her one of the most influential voices in contemporary American poetry.

Her poetry is characterized by precise and sober language, exploring themes such as loss, family, memory, or desire. She was also a distinguished professor, teaching at universities like Yale or Stanford, mentoring new generations of poets.

Among her most important works are "Firstborn", "The Wild Iris", "Vita Nova", or "Faithful and Virtuous Night". She has been awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1993, National Book Award in 2014, or the Bollingen Prize in 2001.
