Synopsis "Arthur Mervyn"

Arthur mervyn; or memoirs of the year 1793 is an early American Gothic novel that examines moral uncertainty, deception, and survival during crisis. It is important for its portrayal of urban disaster and its early use of psychological realism in American literature. The narrative follows Arthur Mervyn, a young man who arrives in Philadelphia without money and quickly becomes entangled in a world of crime, suspicion, and disease. Set during the yellow fever epidemic of 1793, the story uses the city's chaos as a backdrop for exploring questions of trust and identity. Arthur's experiences include encounters with dishonest figures, shifting alliances, and moral dilemmas that blur the distinction between victim and perpetrator. As he recounts his past to defend his reputation, the novel gradually reveals conflicting perspectives on his character, leaving readers uncertain about his true nature. The epidemic setting intensifies themes of fear, isolation, and social breakdown, while also exposing the fragility of moral judgment in extreme circumstances. The work stands as a foundational text in American Gothic fiction, blending realism, suspense, and psychological complexity
