Unternehmenssysteme sind "kommerzielle Pakete, die die Integration von transaktionsorientierten Daten und Geschäftsprozessen in einer Organisation ermöglichen" (Markus und Tanis, 2000). ERP integriert die Prozesse und Daten einer Organisation in einer einzigen Plattform. Um die Integration zu erreichen, verwenden die meisten ERP-Systeme eine integrierte Datenbank, um Daten für eine Vielzahl von Funktionen innerhalb des Unternehmens zu sammeln. Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) ist ein System zur Koordinierung und Verwaltung aller Informationen, Ressourcen und Funktionen eines Unternehmens von einem gemeinsamen Datenspeicher aus. Das ERP-System besteht aus zahlreichen Modulen, wie z. B. Vertrieb, Personalwesen, Lagerhaltung, Produktion sowie Finanz- und Rechnungswesen, die eine organisationsübergreifende Integration von transaktionsbasierten Daten durch eingebettete organisatorische Prozesse ermöglichen. Die Implementierung von ERP-Systemen steht heute ganz oben auf der Prioritätenliste von Unternehmen.
