Tony Durán, nacido en Puerto Rico, educado como un norteamericano en Nueva Jersey, fue asesinado a comienzos de los años setenta en un pueblo de la provincia de Buenos Aires. Había llegado siguiendo a las bellas hermanas Belladona, las gemelas Ada y Sofía. Las conoció en Atlantic City, y urdieron un feliz trío hasta que una de ellas, Sofía, desertó del juego. Y Tony Durán continuó con Ada, y la siguió a la Argentina, donde encontró su muerte. A partir del crimen, esta novela policíaca muta y se transforma en un relato que se anuda en arqueologías familiares, que combina la veloz novela de género y la espléndida construcción literaria. El centro luminoso del libro es Luca Belladona, constructor de una fábrica fantasmal que persigue con obstinación un proyecto demencial. La aparición de Emilio Renzi, el tradicional personaje de Piglia, le da a la historia una conclusión irónica y conmovedora. Ricardo Piglia se confirma, incontestablemente, como uno de los escritores mayores en lengua española de nuestro tiempo.

Ricardo Piglia (Adrogué, 1941-Buenos Aires, 2017) is unanimously considered a classic of current Spanish-language literature. He published his five novels at Anagrama: Artificial Respiration, The Absent City, Burnt Money (adapted into film by Marcelo Piñeyro; Planeta Prize Argentina), Nocturnal Target (Critics' Prize, Rómulo Gallegos Prize, International Dashiell Hammett Novel Prize, and José María Arguedas Casa de las Américas Narrative Prize) and The Path of Ida; the stories of The Invasion, False Name, Perpetual Prison and The Cases of Commissioner Croce; and the texts of Brief Forms (Bartolomé March Critic's Prize), Criticism and Fiction, The Last Reader, and Personal Anthology, which can be read as the first essays and attempts at a future autobiography, which crystallizes in The Diaries of Emilio Renzi, divided into three volumes. Piglia was also awarded the Grand Prize of Honor of the Argentine Writers Society, the José Donoso, the Ibero-American Narrative Manuel Rojas, the Konex, and the Formentor de las Letras.
