Ich nahm ihre Guitarre, und sie gab mir das Wort "Unsterblichkeit" auf. Ich überlegte den reichen Stoff, griff einige Accorde und begann nun mein Gedicht, wie es unmittelbar meiner Seele entquoll [...]." Die Geschichte von dem italienischen Waisenjungen Antonio, dem "Improvisator", ist Hans Christian Andersens erster Roman, der im Zusammenhang mit seinen Reisen durch Italien im Jahr 1835 entstand.
