Die Entstehungszeit dieses unvollendeten Werkes - vom Sommer 1914 bis Januar 1915 - fiel mit prägnanten Ereignissen im Leben des Autors zusammen. Im Juli 1914 fand die Auflösung der Verlobung mit Felice Bauer statt. Dieses Ereignis war für Kafka mit einem Gefühl des Angeklagt-Seins verbunden, eine abschlie ende Aussprache im Berliner Hotel Askanischer Hof in Anwesenheit von Felices Schwester Erna und Felices Freundin Grete Bloch, mit der Kafka einen verfänglichen Briefwechsel geführt hatte, empfand Kafka als "Gerichtshof".

His unique literary style has often been associated with the artistic philosophy of existentialism and expressionism. His personal relationships also had a significant impact on his writing. The term Kafkaesque is used in Spanish to describe bizarre situations, due to their absurdity and distressing nature.
