El 26 de mayo de 2003, por iniciativa del Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México, la Escuela Libre de Derecho, la Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Azcapotzalco y el Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Penales, se inauguró la Cátedra Ernesto Garzón Valdés. Esta Cátedra nace con el propósito de honrar a uno de los más destacados y eminentes juristas y filósofos contemporáneos por su desinteresada y fecunda contribución a la vida académica y universitaria de México. En este libro se recogen los textos leídos en la ceremonia inaugural así como la disertación de Manuel Atienza, primer catedrático invitado.

Manuel Atienza Rodríguez (Oviedo, 1951) is a prominent Spanish jurist and legal philosopher. PhD in Law from the University of Oviedo, he has served as a professor of Legal Philosophy at the University of Alicante, where he also directed the Doxa journal and the Master in Legal Argumentation. His academic work focuses on the theory of legal argumentation and legal philosophy.

Among his most influential works are "Curso de argumentación jurídica" (2013), "Las razones del derecho: teorías de la argumentación jurídica" (1991) and "El sentido del derecho" (2001). These books, belonging to the genre of academic essays, have been fundamental in the study of argumentation and legal interpretation.
