Las Elegías Romanas constituyen uno de los momentos más brillantes de la poesía de Goethe. Por su métrica, objeto y finalidad ?Elegías Romanas? representan una de las cimas del llamado «clasicismo de Weimar» y, en consecuencia, son también una muestra de rechazo a la sensibilidad romántica. Goethe quiere una poesía natural, que cante y diga la naturaleza en su inmediatez perceptual: quiere ver la naturaleza como sexo y paisaje. Pero las ?Elegías Romanas? no son la escritura de una Roma en la que la naturaleza era amor y el amor naturaleza, sino la coagulación literaria de un recuerdo que con el tiempo se transforma en realidad. Si Schiller encuentra en el mundo clásico un momento de aproximación entre arte y moral y, en consecuencia, la afirmación del espíritu, Goethe entiende que Roma le ha enseñado a separar una de otra a modo de condición inexcusable para la afirmación incondicionada dela sensorialidad y la materialidad de la naturaleza externa, pero que tal afirmación se lleve a cabo con un gesto vital y poético de rechazo al romanticismo no hace sino poner de manifiesto la pervivencia de los fantasmas románticos, al igual que el deseo de anular la distancia temporal entre el presente y la antigüedad clásica lleva consigo, implícita o explícitamente, reconocerla Final del formulario

Poet, novelist, playwright, scientist, and German politician. At the University of Strasbourg, he met Herder, who introduced him to the works of Shakespeare and whom he later helped to create the German Romantic movement Sturm und Drang. In 1775, Charles Augustus, heir to the Duchy of Saxe-Weimar, invited Goethe to live and work in Weimar, which was then one of the intellectual and literary centers of Germany. There, he developed a brilliant political career which he eventually abandoned to dedicate himself to traveling and writing. He is one of the greatest literary exponents of Romanticism and for many the most important writer in German literature.
