Synopsis "La Obligacion (in Spanish)"

Ferdinand vive con su mujer en una Suiza llena de paisajes hermosos. Él es pintor y está dedicado a penetrar en los secretos de la belleza que hay en lo natural. Sin embargo, al recibir una carta de reclutamiento para pelear en la Primera Guerra Mundial, descubre que él no es solo él, sino todos los hombres unidos o una sociedad en marcha. Ferdinand tiene el deber de pelear por su país, de liberar Europa, pero se debe también al arte, a la profundidad de la existencia, al amor y su familia. ¿Hay una obligación más fuerte que la otra?

Publicada en 1920, esta novela corta de Stefan Zweig, uno de los autores europeos más importantes del siglo XX, toca conflictos presentes en la vida del autor, cruzada por ambas Guerras Mundiales. Si bien para la Primera fue abiertamente pacifista, para la Segunda fue acusado de no atreverse a escribir sobre la guerra y el nazismo, dilema que aquí, años antes, ya enfrentaba.
