I Sur l'antique voie ferrée Le chemin, à peine tracé, suivait ce qui 
avait été jadis le remblai d'une voie ferrée, que depuis bien des années aucun train n'avait parcourue. À droite et à gauche, la forêt, qui escaladait et gonflait les pentes du remblai,
l'enveloppait d'une vague verdoyante d'arbres et d'arbustes. Le chemin n'était qu'une simple piste, à peine assez large pour laisser passer deux hommes de front. C'était quelque chose comme un sentier d'animaux sauvages. Çà et là, un morceau de fer rouillé apparaissait, indiquant que, sous les buissons, rails et traverses subsistaient. On voyait, à un endroit, un arbre surgir qui, en croissant, avait soulevé en l'air avec lui tout un rail, qui se montrait à nu. La lourde traverse avait suivi le rail, auquel elle était rivée encore par un écrou. On apercevait au-dessous les pierres du ballast, à demi recouvertes par des feuilles mortes. Ainsi, rail et traverse, bizarrement enlacés l'un dans l'autre, pointaient vers le ciel, fantomatiques. Si antique que fût la voie ferrée, on reconnaissait sans peine, à son étroitesse, qu'elle avait été à voie unique.

Jack London (1876-1916), pseudonym of John Griffith Chaney, is one of the great American writers of the early 20th century. His world is inspired by a very subjective interpretation of Nietzsche's philosophy and is built on the principle of survival of the fittest. Born in San Francisco, he was essentially a self-taught child who avidly read the collections of the public library. At seventeen, he embarked on his first schooner, heading to Japan. After several experiences as a sailor and vagabond -which also led to his imprisonment-, London attended Oakland High School and later, the University of California, which he had to leave due to financial problems. Like many, he suffered from gold fever until he finally turned to writing.
