Jean de Kermor, français souhaite retrouver les traces de son père, colonel, dont il a réceptionné tardivement une dernière lettre partie de San Fernando aux quasi sources de l'Orénoque, au Venezuela. Il est accompagné dans cette aventure compliquée par le sergent Martial, fidèle compagnon de route du Colonel. D'îles en îles ils vont connaître le mauvais temps, des secousses sismiques, feront embarquer involontairement des personnages dangereux, auront à combattre des situations périlleuses...
