Lucy, una joven antillana de diecinueve años, llega a Estados Unidos para trabajar como au pair para Lewis y Mariah y sus cuatro hijas. Lewis y Mariah son una pareja tres veces bendecida: bellos, ricos y felices. Sin embargo, casi de inmediato, se torna evidente para Lucy que esa realidad es solo una fachada. Con una mezcla de ira y compasión, Lucy examina las suposiciones y verdades del mundo de sus empleadores y las compara con las vívidas realidades de su lugar de origen. Lucy no es ingenua sobre su pasado pero tampoco está dispuesta a dejarse engañar respecto a su presente. Lejos de su isla natal, buscando dejar su legado atrás, Lucy vive al mismo tiempo un escape y una aventura, y en ese tránsito, que es también un pasaje entre la juventud y la adultez, reflexiona sobre el mundo y, más importante aun, sobre aquellos que la rodean. Jamaica Kincaid (born Elaine Cynthia Potter Richardson in 1949, Saint John's, Antigua and Barbuda) is a Caribbean-American writer and essayist known for her lyrical style and focus on themes such as identity, colonialism, and family relationships. At 17, she moved to New York, where she worked as an au pair and later adopted the pseudonym Jamaica Kincaid. She collaborated with The New Yorker magazine from 1976 to 1995. Currently, she resides in Vermont and has been a professor at Harvard University

Among her most notable works are Annie John (1985), A Small Place (1988), Lucy (1990), The Autobiography of My Mother (1995), My Brother (1997), and Mr. Potter (2002). Her work has been translated into multiple languages and has received awards such as the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award and the Prix Femina Étranger. Kincaid is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
