A mediados del siglo XIX, el Imperio Ruso es amenazado por la rebelión de varios pueblos asiáticos liderados por los tártaros. Las principales ciudades de Siberia van cayendo unas tras otras en poder de los rebeldes, y el hermano del zar, el gran duque de Rusia, se apresta a organizar la defensa de Irkutsk, capital de Siberia oriental. Sin embargo, el traidor ruso Iván Ogareff urde un plan para que Irkutsk caiga en manos de los tártaros, y cuando el zar se entera de la conjura de Ogareff, envía a Irkutsk al capitán de correos Miguel Strogoff con el propósito de prevenir al gran duque. Para llevar a cabo su delicada misión. Strogoff emprende un largo y peligroso viaje a través de Rusia en el que ha de sortear toda clase de dificultades y sufrir la barbarie de los tártaros. En el transcurso de su aventura, el protagonista pone a prueba su fortaleza, su coraje y su voluntad, pero, sobre todo, tiene la ocasión de descubrir la generosidad, el sacrificio y el amor que le dispensan sus compañeros de viaje.
