Avignon, mai 1727. Bannière, jeune novice chez les jésuites, passionné de théâtre, voit l'actrice Olympe de Clèves par la fenêtre de son couvent. Il en tombe amoureux, s'enfuit et se rend au théâtre, où il se retrouve sur les planches, remplaçant Champmeslé, acteur pieux honteux d'être comédien. Ce dernier vole les habits de Bannière et se fait jésuite à sa place. Bannière est contraint de fuir, ayant rompu son noviciat. Olympe, qui vient de se faire éconduire par son amant, M. de Mailly, s'éprend de Bannière, et ils fuient vers Lyon. Là, Olympe est engagée comme comédienne, et Bannière est tiraillé par deux démons: le jeu et la jalousie. Il vole une bague donnée à Olympe par M. de Mailly et la vend. La beauté et le talent d'Olympe lui attirent l'amour de l'abbé d'Hoirac et la jalousie de la Catalane, actrice dans son nouveau théâtre. Celle-ci, avec l'aide de sa coiffeuse, se fait passer pour Olympe et cède aux avances de M. d'Hoirac, qui est dupe de cette comédie et offre à la Catalane la bague de M. de Mailly, qu'il a achetée. Olympe, blessée de voir la bague au doigt de sa rivale et pensant qu'elle lui a été donnée par Bannière, le quitte, alors même qu'elle l'aime toujours...

Alexandre Dumas is one of the most prolific and popular authors from France. He was born in 1802 in the city of Villers-Cotterets, and soon moved to Paris to work as a secretary for the Duke of Orléans. There, he completed his education on his own and began to take an interest in writing.
He started by writing plays, and then moved on to poems and long stories. However, his real success did not come until 1844, the year he released the work that would catapult him to fame: The Three Musketeers. The serial publication of this novel brought him a huge sum of money, but it also meant countless hours of work, many collaborators, and the production of up to eighty installments to meet the growing public demand.
After the publication of The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo, Dumas amassed a great fortune. However, his hedonistic nature led him to squander all he had earned and he soon found himself forced to exile in Belgium to escape his French creditors.
The Count of Monte Cristo, the pinnacle of the author's narrative, is considered one of the greatest adventure novels of all time.
