Richard Courant fue un influyente matemático alemán-estadounidense, nacido en 1888 y reconocido por sus aportes tanto en la investigación como en la divulgación matemática. Discípulo de David Hilbert, se destacó en análisis matemático y ecuaciones diferenciales parciales, y más tarde emigró a Estados Unidos, donde fundó el Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences en la Universidad de Nueva York, un centro de referencia mundial en investigación matemática.
