Die Häufigkeit von Peniskrebs (PC) in den Entwicklungsländern Asiens, Afrikas und Lateinamerikas ist hoch und gilt als Problem der öffentlichen Gesundheit. Brasilien gehört zu den Ländern mit der weltweit höchsten PC-Inzidenz. Die Erkrankung macht 2,1 % aller Neoplasien bei Männern aus und betrifft vor allem die Bewohner der nördlichen und nordöstlichen Regionen. Die bekannten Risikofaktoren für die Entstehung von PC sind: schlechte Hygiene, Phimose, Infektion mit dem humanen Papillomavirus (HPV), Tabakkonsum und riskantes Sexualverhalten. Eine HPV-Infektion liegt bei 30 bis 50 Prozent der Fälle von Peniskrebs vor. Und der immunhistochemische Test auf p16INK4a wird als Indikator für das Vorhandensein von HPV und als prognostischer Marker für Plattenepithelkarzinome an verschiedenen Stellen verwendet. Die Rolle dieses Markers beim Peniskarzinom ist jedoch noch nicht vollständig geklärt. Daher befasst sich dieses Buch mit der Expression von p16INK4a bei Peniskrebs und HPV.
