When a destructive nematode begins attacking rice crops in the American South, the response is swift and effective. Scientists isolate the organism. Authorities contain it. A standard pesticide eliminates it. The damage is limited. The system works. But the event was never about the damage.

Before the outbreak, a woman entered the university unnoticed. A new identity. A clean history. No reason to question her presence. She did not create the organism. She studied it.

More precisely, she studied the system that surrounded it-its assumptions, its procedures, its limits. The release of the nematode was not an act of destruction, but an experiment. She wanted to see how the system would respond.

What the woman-known first as Carmen, then as Elizabeth-has been preparing is something far more precise. A biological construct designed not only to disrupt a global food supply, but to do so in a way that assigns responsibility. Embedded within it is a molecular signature. It points to the United States.

The release itself would not be immediately visible. The organism would move through the crop quietly, its effects emerging gradually-first as irregular yield loss, then as systemic failure across regions that could not easily be connected.

By the time the pattern is recognized, attribution becomes unavoidable. And response becomes political.

Elsewhere, an unrelated threat begins to emerge-one involving forces beneath the surface of the Earth, and a technology capable of operating just beyond the present, where actions cannot be directly observed. It is in response to that threat that a new capability is revealed.

It will later be called the Ultimate Weapon.

By the time the true nature of Carmen's plan becomes clear, there is only limited time to act-and no conventional method capable of stopping it. The solution will require a use of that weapon in a way that that was never intended. And the cost will not be reversible.
