The Sand Dragon
Henry Galio (Author) · HG Publishing · Paperback
Built by hands. Named by voice. Woken by moon. Kept by sea.
On the last evening of summer light, a girl named Lina builds a dragon out of sand - a dragon with carved scales, an extra claw, and one crooked wing she decides not to fix. Then the full moon rises, and she speaks his name out loud.
And the sand breathes.
He is not the roaring kind of dragon. His voice is low and dry and warm, like the biggest waves heard a long way off, and the first thing he says is that she took a very long time with his wings. When he points out that the second one is crooked, Lina tells him it’s hers, same as the first - and that, it turns out, is exactly the answer he was hoping for.
So begins a friendship unlike any other: moonlit races down a silver beach, suppers of green sea glass, and the secrets of an ancient magic with four simple rules. Hands to build. A voice to name. A moon to wake. The fourth rule, the dragon says, is one you have to see.
But the moon is already leaning. Night by night her dragon grows slower, quieter. First he stops running. Then he can only whisper. On the whisper nights, lying against his warm sandy side, Lina hears the oldest story on any beach: how the Maker built the very first dragon from leftover sand and ends of light, left its crooked wing alone, and spoke its name into the dark. And then the dark of the moon comes, and the highest tide of all comes up the beach... and Lina learns the fourth thing.
The Sand Dragon is a bedtime story about the friend who waits - through thinning moons, long winters, and even longer years. It’s a story for every child who has ever had to say goodbye to a summer, a place, or someone they love - and for every grown-up reading aloud who knows that things can change form without ever being lost.
It is also a gentle story about imperfection. Lina’s dragon is not perfect, and he is loved all the more for it. Children who worry that their drawings, their castles, or they themselves are not quite right will find a quiet answer here: some mistakes are load-bearing.
Because true friends wait. One month, or one year, or sixteen.
And the sand is very, very patient.
