Synopsis "The Warden"

Septimus Harding is leading a contented life as the warden of Hiram's Hospital, an almshouse in the diocese of Barchester, when a young reformer challenges the way that the charity is run. In the ensuing legal battle between the diocese and the reformers, Mr Harding is besieged by both sides until his position becomes intolerable. The story is told with the usual humour we expect from Anthony Trollope. This is the first of the Barchester Chronicles but can be read as a stand alone novel.
