Claude Lévi-Strauss fue un antropólogo y etnólogo francés, nacido el 28 de noviembre de 1908 en Bruselas y fallecido el 30 de octubre de 2009 en París. Es considerado uno de los pensadores más influyentes del siglo XX y el principal representante del estructuralismo en las ciencias sociales. Su formación comenzó en filosofía, pero pronto se interesó por la antropología, lo que lo llevó a realizar trabajo de campo en Brasil en la década de 1930, estudiando a pueblos indígenas como los bororo y los nambikwara.

Lévi-Strauss revolucionó la antropología al aplicar principios del estructuralismo lingüístico al estudio de las culturas. Propuso que las estructuras del pensamiento humano son universales y que pueden descubrirse en mitos, sistemas de parentesco y costumbres.
