Wurzelresorption ist der fortschreitende Verlust von Dentin und Zement durch die fortgesetzte Wirkung osteoklastischer Zellen. Im Milchgebiss ist dies ein normaler physiologischer Prozess bei der Exfoliation von Milchzähnen, der jedoch im Erwachsenengebiss weitgehend pathologisch ist. Der Resorptionsprozess kann selbstlimitierend sein und klinisch unerkannt bleiben. Wenn der anfängliche oberflächliche Resorptionsprozess einmal in Gang gekommen ist und z.B. durch eine Infektion und/oder Druck aufrechterhalten wird, setzt sich dieZerstörung der Zahnhartsubstanz fort und es kann zu einem Verlust von Zahngewebe kommen. Dies kann dazu führen, dass der Zahn nicht mehr zu retten ist. Wenn nicht eingegriffen wird, kann es zum vorzeitigen Verlust des betroffenen Zahns kommen. Eine erfolgreiche Behandlung hängt von einem gründlichen Verständnis der Diagnose ab.
