El rey Don Juan V de Portugal, desesperado ante la falta de herederos, promete levantar un convento en Mafra a cambio de que su esposa Doña María Ana logre concebir un hijo. Simultáneamente, Baltasar Sietesoles, un ex soldado manco, conoce a Blimunda, una mujer con poderes mágicos que ve dentro de las personas, con la que se casa en un ritual personal, ella haciéndole a él una seña en el pecho con la sangre de su himen, desafiando así los rigores de la religión omnipresente. Baltasar se convierte en ayudante del padre Bartolomeu, personaje histórico que acabaría muriendo en Toledo y que, bajo la protección del rey, trabaja en la construcción de una máquina voladora. Ésta simboliza, por un lado, los ideales cultos, representados por el estudioso padre Bartolomeu, y por otro la fuerza de la voluntad, personificada en Blimunda, Baltasar y otras personas que consiguen sumar recorriendo las tierras portuguesas. Memorial del convento narra un período de cerca de treinta años de la historia de Portugal, en una narración directa, vigorosa y rica. Uno de los textos más célebres de la literatura portuguesa de todos los tiempos. Porque todo puede ser contado de otra manera.

José Saramago (Azinhaga, 1922-Tías, Lanzarote, 2010) is one of the most well-known and appreciated Portuguese writers worldwide. In Spain, since the first publication of The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis in 1985, his literary work received the best reception from readers and critics.
