Jay Parini es un escritor, poeta, novelista y biógrafo estadounidense. Nació el 2 de abril de 1948 en Pittston, Pensilvania, Estados Unidos. Creció en la ciudad de Scranton y desde joven mostró interés por la literatura y la escritura.

Estudió en Lafayette College, donde se graduó en 1970. Posteriormente, continuó sus estudios en la Universidad de St Andrews, en Escocia, donde obtuvo un doctorado en 1975. A lo largo de su carrera, Parini ha escrito novelas, poemas, biografías y ensayos.

Una de sus obras más conocidas es The Last Station, una novela que relata los últimos días de la vida del famoso escritor ruso León Tolstói. Esta obra fue adaptada al cine y recibió una nominación a los premios Óscar. También escribió Borges and Me, un libro basado en su experiencia al conocer y viajar con el escritor argentino Jorge Luis Borges.

Parini también ha escrito biografías de importantes autores, como John Steinbeck, Robert Frost, William Faulkner y Gore Vidal. Además de ser escritor, trabajó como profesor de literatura y escritura creativa en Middlebury College.

Sus obras han sido traducidas a numerosos idiomas y es reconocido por sus aportes a la literatura estadounidense.
