El 1953, un jove Saramago donava per acabada la novel·la Claraboia i l'enviava a una editorial portuguesa sense fer-ne cap còpia. El manuscrit es va perdre i quaranta anys després, quan va rebre la insòlita notícia que "en una mudança s'havia trobat un manuscrit i que estarien molt interessats a publicar-lo", l'escriptor els va respondre que ja no era el moment. En vida mai no va voler que es publiqués, tot i que va deixar escrit que, un cop mort, els qui el sobreviurien podien fer el que creguessin convenient. José Saramago (Azinhaga, 1922-Tías, Lanzarote, 2010) is one of the most well-known and appreciated Portuguese writers worldwide. In Spain, since the first publication of The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis in 1985, his literary work received the best reception from readers and critics. Other important titles include The Widow, Manual of Painting and Calligraphy, Raised from the Ground, Baltasar and Blimunda, The Stone Raft, The History of the Siege of Lisbon, The Gospel According to Jesus Christ, Blindness, All the Names, The Cave, The Double, Seeing, Death with Interruptions, The Elephant's Journey, Cain, Skylight, and Alabardas.
