Synopsis "El Jardín (in Spanish)"

In this story that was originally published in 1888, an American woman living in Europe has to make a difficult decision in light of a personal tragedy that turns her life upside-down. At the end of the 19th century, Prudence finds herself in Italy even though she doesn't particularly like it; she settles there after marrying a widower who has multiple children--and who dies shortly after the wedding. The protagonist must choose whether to abandon her new family and return to the United States or to stay and try to find comfort in tending to something that reminds her of her former home: the front yard. This unique illustrated edition of a story dealing with women's roles in the family and in society at the turn of the century contains beautiful watercolor accompaniments.
