Synopsis "Ummi (in Spanish)"

Ummi es una palabra árabe que se traduce en castellano como “mi mamá”, pero también en es el título de esta historia: a de una madre que reconstruye la memoria de su familia, la de una tierra brutalmente atacada, una mirada que viaja en el tiempo para dar con sus raíces y la de un grupo de migrantes que comen o a llegar a Latinoamérica hace más de un siglo. Hoy, en Chile, la comunidad palestina es la más grande fuera de Oriente Medio. Desentrañar los motivos que llevaron a diferentes familias árabes a asentarse en el continente americano ha sido materia de diversas disciplinas, pero dilucidar por qué miles de ellas –con una barrera idiomática y cultural a cuestas– deciden construir sus vidas en este país, es quizás uno de los secretos más reveladores que las voces de estas páginas susurran entre líneas. Ummi habla de la sangre que se ha transmitido de generación en generación, de los antepasados que se cambiaron sus nombres en un largo viaje que atraviesa el tiempo y el espacio, uno que escucha e interpreta Isabel Baboun, quien ha escrito con maestría un libro tan emocionante como único.

Isabel Baboun Garib (Santiago de Chile, 1984) is a Chilean writer and actress. She studied acting at the Catholic University of Chile, earned a master's degree in Creative Writing at New York University, and a PhD in Literature at the University of California. Additionally, she completed the advanced screenplay program at the International School of Film and Television in San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba. Currently, she serves as a teacher and coordinator of the Oral Expression Workshop I and II courses at the Faculty of Liberal Arts.

Among her notable works are "Todos los árboles" (2014), a poetry book; "Un hermano muerto" (2018), a collection of stories; and "La Tailandesa" (2023), her first novel. In 2025, she published "Ummi. A story of Palestinian migration", where she explores Palestinian migration in Chile through her family history and that of the Palestinian community at large. Her literary work spans genres such as poetry, short stories, and novels, exploring themes of identity, migration, and memory.

Libro muy bien escrito, poético, entretenido. Aprendí mucho sobre Palestina, pero también me hizo repensar mi propia memoria familiar. Muy recomendado.
